The Junior League of Detroit has been actively involved in helping people in the city of Detroit for 96 years. Our past projects include the Playroom at the Children’s Hospital of Michigan, the Cornerstone Schools Association Partnership Project and most recently the refurbishment of and regular monthly programming at the Belle Isle Nature Zoo. In 2008, we adopted our current community focus of literacy. Our new program, Project Literacy focuses specifically on improving literacy rates for children in Detroit with an emphasis on kindergarden to third grade. We are working within the 48215 school district at Carstens Elementary School and Montieth Library, providing a variety of literacy programs both students as well as parents and caregivers.
